I love working from home and I’m not alone. Numerous studies show that flexibility in the workplace is important and people often prioritize the flexibility to work from home over other important requirements during their job search, including salary. Avast’s 2018 Business Report survey indicated 52% polled would prefer to take a pay cut rather than be restricted to working in an office.
It used to take me 45 minutes to an hour to travel less than a mile from my house to our former San Francisco office before Splice Machine moved to a 100% remote work environment. Over just one year, I spent more than 15.6 days riding San Francisco’s crowded public transportation to get to and from work.
Prolonged social isolation may dampen people’s attitudes towards working from home. Even if you are accustomed to working from home and love it, you may be feeling like I am. Too much of a good thing gets old. Right now working at an office sounds great, even to me, because it’s someplace other than my house. But before people are asked to return to their office, employers should rethink their work policies and adapt to a “new normal.”
Many people now realize they haven’t been spending enough time with loved ones since they have had an elongated period of time to work from home. When businesses are allowed to safely open up their doors, and employees are allowed to return to work, employers should be prepared to extend their flexible working policy and continue to elaborate on their remote-first operations.
